Internship

Written by

The Internship (6 ECTS) is a laboratory activity which is part of the experimental work for the thesis preparation.

Route to be followed to carry out the Internship:

1. Choosing the laboratory

The Student must identify a laboratory in which the activity will be performed.
Either an "Internal laboratory" or an "External laboratory" can be chosen (External facilities and departments of the University of Pisa already affiliated with the Department of Biology).

The Internship can be performed in the same laboratory where the thesis already takes place or can be performed in other laboratories. In all cases, the student must activate both procedures, for the thesis (guidelines for internal thesis or for external thesis) and for the Internship (guidelines reported in this page).

Internal laboratory:

External laboratory*:

  • a laboratory external to the Department of Biology but internal to the University of Pisa headed by a faculty member NOT belonging to the Aggregate Council of Biotechnology
  • a laboratory located at an affiliated external institution

*doing Internship in an external laboratory always requires the identification and assignment of an internal Tutor (chosen among teachers of the Biotechnologies and Applied Artificial Intelligence for Health master’s degree).

2. Application for authorization

After contacting the head of the chosen laboratory, it is necessary to submit the appropriate application by using the following forms*:

  • Internal Internship: Internal Internship request form

  • External Internship: External Internship request form + declaration of the host institution signed by the legal representative (except for Scuola Sant'Anna, Scuola Normale Superiore and CNR). (The declaration must be produced on the letterhead of the host institution and must necessarily contain the name of the legal representative, the details of the student, the start and end dates of the stay, and the reason for the stay at the institution. The declaration must be dated and signed by the legal representative of the host institution)

The forms must be sent to Questo indirizzo email è protetto dagli spambots. E' necessario abilitare JavaScript per vederlo. and cc’ed to the Tutor (and the external Tutor, if any).

In both cases, the Internship activity will be authorized after the above forms have been sent to the Teaching Unit.

The authorization by the Department's Teaching Unit, as communicated to the student and to the internal/external Tutor by e-mail, replaces in all respects the authorization of the start of the Internship by the Aggregate Council of Biotechnology (Resolution No. 37 of 03/04/2025, prot. AOO "BIO" 2125/2025).

Students will be allowed to start attending the Internship only after receiving such communication from the Department's Teaching Unit.

3. Features of the activity

1 ECTS credit of Internship corresponds to a workload of 25 hours. Internship involves a total of 150 hours of activities (6 ECTS).

4. Final evaluation

The evaluation method is a report on the Internship activities and/or topics. The features of the report are decided by the Internship supervisor: as an example, it could consist of a written laboratory report of about 5 pages (excluding tables and figures) on the Internship topic or of a seminar given to the research group on the Internship technology.

The evaluation will consist of a "pass" or "fail" outcome based on the Internship supervisor's judgment. Students will not receive a numerical grade.

At the end of the evaluation process, the internal Tutor will send to the Department's Teaching Unit (Questo indirizzo email è protetto dagli spambots. E' necessario abilitare JavaScript per vederlo.) the evaluation on the report performed by the student.

Graduation sessions – Department of Biology

Graduation sessions of the courses held by the Department of Biology and relevant deadlines are available on this link.

How is the final grade calculated

The grade is determined by the overall curriculum of studies, the thesis and its discussion, in accordance with the University’s Didactic Regulations and furthergeneral criteria formulated by the Board of the Course.

The vote is expressed on the basis of 110 points. For the attribution of the honors, the unanimous vote of the committee is required. The final grade is then determined by the commission in front of which the candidate discusses the thesis. The maximumgrade is 110/110 with the possible addition of honors. The final graderesults from the sum of the following components:

A) marks average expressed in thirtieths, weighted with the credits, on the profit examinations passed within the Master's Degree Course (75% of the totalweight);
B) average of the grades assigned in thirtieths by each of the 5 to 7 members of Commission (2 to 4 fixed members, the supervisor and the two thesisexaminers) based on the outcome of the test and taking into consideration the supervisor’s and examiners’ assessments (25% of the total weight).

The final grade is defined according to the following formula (A x 3 + B) x 115/120.
The supervisor or the Commission’s president may recommend, after consultation with thesis examiners, awarding the honors in the case the student reaches a final grade of 110 out of 110without rounding up.

In the awarding of the honors it is mandatory that the student has reached a grade of 30 out of30 with honors in at least 2 fundamental exams of the master degree course or that he/she has a curricular average of at least 29 out of 30.

Focused lab training

Written by

The Focused Lab Training (FLT) is a full laboratory activity course aimed at providing the student with specific training in innovative and advanced technologies and techniques that will improve their laboratory skills. The FLT course can relate to the internship thesis topic or be an option for students to expand their technological knowledge independently on their thesis topic.

1. Choosing the laboratory

A student who plans to do Focused Lab Training must identify a laboratory in which the activity will be performed.
Either an "Internal laboratory" or an "External laboratory" (see below for further information) can be chosen.

Internal laboratory:

External laboratory*:

  • a laboratory external to the Department of Biology but internal to the University of Pisa headed by a faculty member NOT belonging to the Aggregate Council of Biotechnology
  • a laboratory located at an affiliated external institution

*doing FLT in an external laboratory always requires the identification and assignment of an internal Tutor (chosen among teachers of the Biotechnologies and Applied Artificial Intelligence for Health master’s degree).

2. Application for authorization

After contacting the head of the chosen laboratory, it is necessary to submit the appropriate application by using the following forms*:

  • Internal FLT: Internal FLT request form

  • External FLT: External FLT request form + declaration of the host institution signed by the legal representative (except for Scuola Sant'Anna, Scuola Normale Superiore and CNR).

In both cases, the laboratory activity will be authorized after the above forms have been sent to the Teaching Unit.

The authorization by the Department's Teaching Unit, as communicated to the student and to the internal/external Tutor by e-mail, replaces in all respects the authorization of the start of the activity by the Aggregate Council of Biotechnology (Resolution No. 85 of 02/07/2024, prot. AOO "BIO" 4009/2024).

Students will be allowed to start attending the Focused Lab Training only after receiving such communication from the Department's Teaching Unit.

3. Features of the activity

Focused Lab Training involves a total of 96 hours of laboratory activities (6 ECTS).

4. Final evaluation

The evaluation method is a report on the FLT activities and/or topics. The features of the report are decided by the FLT supervisor: as an example, it could consist of a written laboratory report of about 5 pages (excluding tables and figures) on the FLT topic or of a seminar given to the research group on the FLT technology.

The evaluation will consist of a "pass" or "fail" outcome based on the FLT supervisor's judgment.
