The Master's degree thesis is an experimental work that can be carried out at:
- The laboratories of the Department of Biology (internal thesis);
- The laboratories of other Department of the University of Pisa (such as the Department of Information Engineering, Department of Computer Sciences, Department of Pharmacy, and Department of New Technologies in Translational Medicine) (internal thesis);
- One of the following research institutions: Scuola Normale Superiore, CNR (Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche), Scuola Superiore Sant'Anna (external thesis);
- Research institutions or companies located in Italy or abroad (external thesis).
Laboratories, institutions, companies and structures where the Master’s degree thesis work is held can be either public or private.

The Master's thesis corresponds to 21 ECTS: 1 ECTS credit corresponds to a workload of 25 hours.
National mobility for Thesis internships
The master’s degree participates in the “Erasmus Italiano” call with an agreement with the master’s degree in Medical Biotechnologies at University of Padua. Students can apply for a contribution to have their internship for thesis preparation at the University of Padua.

International mobility
Students willing to carry out their Master’s degree thesis work abroad can apply for the Erasmus scholarship and other kinds of scholarships provided by UNIPI (see this link).
Students admitted to the double-degree program can also apply for mobility grants from the Department of Biology (AI and Health, Project Nr. 101083880) for internships in universities, research centres or companies, on AI and health topics.
