The threat of ocean deoxygenation is poorly understood in the tropics relative to temperate regions. Coral reefs have shown signs of bleaching, degradation, and mass mortality in response to low oxygen. Here I highlight some of the mechanisms of resilience that offer an optimistic view of coral reef ecosystem resilience to hypoxic stress.
