Italian curriculum specifications

1. Academic curriculum: details of the prerequisites with the indication of the Italian Scientific Sectors

Students with the following requirements will be eligible for the access to the Master’s Degree in Biotechnologies and Applied Artificial Intelligence for Health:

a. Those who have earned a first level degree in Biotechnologies (L-2 class) or Biological Sciences (L-13 class), and have acquired, in their previous educational programs, knowledge corresponding to at least 30 ECTS in biology disciplines (SSD from BIO/01 to BIO/19) and at least 18 ECTS in Biochemistry (BIO/10), Genetics (BIO/18) and Molecular Biology (BIO/11);

b. Those who have earned a first level degree in Engineering (L-8 or L-9 classes) or Informatics (L-31 class) and have acquired, in their previous educational programs, knowledge corresponding to at least 30 ECTS in informatics, biomedical engineering, mathematics, statistics (SSD INF/01, ING-INF/05, ING-INF/06, from MAT/01 to MAT/09, SECS-S/01) and at least 6 ECTS in Mathematics (from MAT/01 to MAT/09) and 12 ECTS in INF/01, ING-INF/05, ING-INF/06, SECS-S/01;

c. Those who have earned a first level degree in other classes and have acquired, in their previous educational programs, knowledge corresponding to at least 90 ECTS in SSD indicated as ‘basic’ in the schemes of class L-2 - Biotechnologies (from FIS/01 to FIS/08; INF/01; from MAT/01 to MAT/09; MED/01; SECS-S/01, SECS-S/02; CHIM/01, CHIM/02, CHIM/03, CHIM/06; BIO/01, BIO/10, BIO/11, BIO/13, BIO/17, BIO/18, BIO/19) or L-13 Biological Sciences (BIO/01, BIO/02, BIO/04, BIO/05, BIO/06, BIO/07, BIO/09, BIO/10, BIO/11, BIO/18, BIO/19; from FIS/01 to FIS/ 08; INF/01; ING-INF/05; from MAT/01 to MAT/09; CHIM/01, CHIM/02, CHIM/03, CHIM/06);

The above mentioned requirements are also applied to Students with qualifications obtained abroad at university level. Qualifications certificates must indicate the number of ECTS obtained in each discipline during the previous educational path.

Eligibility of Students will be evaluated by the Admission Committee composed by the teachers of the Master's Degree Course.
In case of educational deficits, admitted Students will be advised about specific teaching activities to compensate the lack of that specific ECTS.

Scholarship

Students admitted to Master's Degree course in Biotechnologies and Applied Artificial Intelligence for Health can benefit from a wide range of scholarship.

TUITION FEES EXEMPTION FOR MERIT

DSU SCHOLARSHIP

Students can apply for the scholarship provided by the Agenzia Regionale Diritto allo Studio Universitario. DSU is the agency for the University Study Right of the Tuscany Regional Council (Regione Toscana).

MAECI SCHOLARSHIP

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation (MAECI) offers grants in favor of foreign citizens* and Italian citizens living abroad (IRE)** in order to foster international cooperation in cultural, scientific and technological fields, to promote Italian language and culture and to support Italy’s economic system in the world (according to Law 288/55 and its subsequent changes and additions). Grants are offered to complete study courses and research/training programs in public or legally recognized Italian educational institutions. Scholarships are available to attend academic courses on the Italian territory only.

AI & Health EU Project

The Master’s Degree course in “Biotechnologies and Applied Artificial Intelligence for Health” participates in the recently funded EU project “AI & Health”. In the frame of this project, scholarships will be activated for students participating in double degree programs together with other top-level European Universities (Aix-Marseille University, Stockholm University, Universidad Autonoma de Barcelona). Elective classes

As provided on the Rules and Regulation of the study programme, elective classes are scheduled during the second year of the Master's Degree Course. Students can choose elective classes among the following:

  • Metagenomics
  • The Law and Ethics of A.I.-driven biomedical innovation
  • Molecular Genetics and Molecular Medicine in the AI-era
  • Focused lab training

As optional credits, Students can also freely choose classes offered by any Master’s Degree of Biology and Biotechnology that are not mandatory for their own curriculum, without any further authorization. The only requirement is that the chosen elective class must be taught in English.

Here is a list of elective classes available for academic year 2024/25.

Students interested in one or more elective class(es) must contact directly the Lecturer within one week from the beginning of the lessons. Students may find the email address and phone number of the Lecturers on the search engine of the University of Pisa (UNIMAP). 

NOTICE: an elective class will be shown on the timetable of the lessons only if the Teacher has been contacted by the Students who have expressed their interest to participate to the course.

To choose any other course, Students must submit a motivated request following the procedure given on the following page. The form to be used is the “Autorizzazione esami” form.
The form should be sent to the contact person for the degree program in the student secretary's office.
NB: It is necessary to wait for authorization from the Council of the Master’s Degree (we advise to send the request even before starting to attend the course). 

COURSES HELD AT THE SCUOLA NORMALE SUPERIORE
Starting from a.y. 2023/2024, it is possible to take courses taught at the Scuola Normale Superiore in three different ways:

  • take a course as an auditor/hearer (without taking the corresponding exam), with the issuance of a certificate of attendance. In this case, it is NOT necessary to seek prior permission from the Course of study Council;
  • taking a course, taking the related examination and requesting its recognition in the career as a supernumerary CFU. In this case, it is NOT necessary to seek prior authorization from the Course of study Council;
  • take a course, take the relevant examination and request its recognition in the career exclusively as an activity of the student's choice.
    In this case it is necessary to request prior authorization from the Course of study Council.
    For the request it is necessary to follow the procedure given on the following page. The form to be used is the “Autorizzazione esami” form.
    The form should be sent to the contact person for the degree program in the student secretary's office.
    NB: It is necessary to wait for authorization from the Course of study Council before taking the exam.
    ONLY after passing the exam, to request recognition in your career as a supernumerary activity or as an elective activity, you must follow the procedure given on the following page.
    The form to be used is the “Riconoscimento crediti” form to which the certification produced by the teacher or institution proposes must be attached.
    The form should be sent to the contact person for the degree program in the student secretary's office.

PLEASE NOTICE: By resolution No. 36 of 20/10/2023, prot. 5618/2023 - repertory 86/2023, the Aggregate Council in Biotechnologies established that the maximum number of CFU that can be earned at the Scuola Normale Superiore as a choice activity is 6 CFU. 

PLEASE NOTICE: Any credits acquired for exams taken without prior authorization from the Course of study Council cannot be recorded in the student’s university career as credits for elective classes.

CAREER LABS - CONTAMINATION LAB - SUMMER/WINTER SCHOOL
The Board of Studies provides the following recognitions in the area of free choice:

- Career Labs: no more than 1 CFU is recognized (at least 25 hours of activity)
- Contamination Lab: no more than 1 CFU is recognized (at least 25 hours of activity)
- Summer/winter school: no more than 1 CFU is recognized, regardless of whether the S/W school is fee-based or not (at least 25 hours of activity).

  1. Register to the Application portal

Applicants must register to the APPLICATION PORTAL and submit their application for relevant call, see call for applications mentioned below.

P.N.:

  • Applicants shall already possess the required bachelor's degree title at the time of application on the Application portal

  1. Pre-selection test (possible) 

After application deadline, based on the number of applicants, the Admission Commitee may decide whether to subject candidates to a pre-selection test. 
If required, all candidates submitting the application through the portal will be subject to a written pre-selection test that will be held online before the interview.

    3. Evaluation of curricular requirements

Evaluation of curricular requirements will be handled by the Admission Commitee only for candidates successfully passing the pre-selection test.

    4. Admission test (interview)

Only applicants successfully passing the pre-selection test and in possession of curricular requirements will be admitted to the interview.
The interview will be performed remotely (on Microsoft Teams) by the Admission Committee, who will ask questions about fundamental disciplines outlined in the syllabus-Admission test.
Calendar of admission test will be notified well in advance on this webpage, see call for applications. Candidates are responsible for periodically checking this webpage to get updated information, because they will not receive any personal communication.

   5. Results of admission test

The outcomes of the admission test may be one of the followings:

  • admission to the MSc with the assignment of the specific curriculum (Biology or Engineering), or
  • non admission to the MSc, or
  • admission under condition: in case of educational deficit, admitted students will be advised about specific teaching activities to compensate the lack of those specific ECTS credits

The list of candidates admitted to the course will be notified on this webpage, see call for apllications. Candidates shall therefore check this webpage for future updates.

  6. Enrollment to the MSc

Candidates who succesfully pass the admission test are admitted to the Master's degree course.

Admission is valid only for the relevant academic year of the call that the candidate applied for. In case the student is not able to complete the enrollment within the given deadline, he/she is required to submit again his/her application through Application portal for the following academic year and participate again in selection process mentioned above ( see point 2-3-4)
Resolution no. 6 of February 7, 2023, which allowed admitted candidates to enroll to the MSc within two solar years from the date of the interview, was repealed by the Resolution n. 9 of February 4, 2025 AOO"BIO" prot. n. 0721/2025 of February 5, 2025. Thus, admission letter shall only refer to the academic year of the relevant call. 

Candidates admitted to the Master's degree course are required to complete the enrollment according to the procedure described on this webpage.
Upon completion of the enrollment procedure the student will receive an email message confirming the enrollment to the MSc.

NON EU students must be aware about time and requirements for the issuing of residence permit / VISA.
NON EU students are require to submit their request for pre-enrollment through the Universitaly portal before applying for VISA.

Those students might also be required to provide international certificate of English language (IELTS, TOEFL, Cambridge, etc.) when applying for VISA at the Italian Diplomatic Authority in their country.

PN: Prevaluation of a prior career
No pre-evaluation is made for the purpose of credits recognition relative to exams taken within a previous career (neither for career shortening - "abbreviazione di carriera", nor for course change or transfer from another Italian university). The evaluation can be made exclusively by the competent body, which is the Course of Study Council, that will take into consideration not only credits and scientific disciplinary sectors of each exam for which recognition is requested, but also the program carried out. Further details are provided by the Teaching Regulations of the relevant course of study.

Admission to the Course

The access to the MSc in Biotechnologies and Applied Artificial intelligence for Health is regulated by a specific procedure. 

Successful applicants must meet the following requirements: 

  • demonstrating a relevant academic curriculum (as defined below) 
  • succesfully passing an admission test (interview)

Academic curriculum:

Successful applicants must have a Bachelor’s degree in Biotechnologies (italian L-2 class), Biological sciences (italian L-13 class), Engineering (italian L-8 or L-9 classes) or Informatics (italian L-31 class). Applicants having a Bachelor in other kind of degrees must have acquired a minimum of 90 ECTS (European Credit Transfer System) in the following fundamental disciplines: Physics, Mathematics, Statistics, Chemistry, Biology and Computer Science.

For degrees that do not conform to the ECT System, the workload associated with each course must be clearly indicated.

Admission test:

The interview, held in English, will focus on fundamental disciplines (see syllabus of admission test) such as mathematics, physics, computer science, biochemistry, biology (cellular systems and organisms).

In compliance with the interdisciplinary nature of the MSc programme, eligible Students will be asked questions about the following topics:

  • students with previous background in biology / biotechnology must demonstrate basic knowledge and preparation in mathematics, physics, computer science
  • students with previous background in mathematics, computer science, engineering must demonstrate basic knowledge and preparation in biology and biotechnology 

Adequate English knowledge (minimum B2 level) will be assessed by the Admission Committee during the interview, which will be completely held in English. Note that English is the official language for all activities (teaching, examinations, etc) in the MSc in Biotechnologies and Applied Artificial intelligence for Health.
