Lo scopo del progetto è comprendere le basi biologiche e le caratteristiche universali della risata, un segnale multimodale condiviso tra primati umani e non umani, rintracciandone i percorsi evolutivi. Il progetto è organizzato in due work packages (WP) complementari ai quali ciascuna unità di ricerca (UNIPI e UNITO) contribuisce.

Il WP1 esplora le modalità di esecuzione e la funzione della risata negli esseri umani e nelle grandi scimmie (scimpanzé e bonobo), concentrandosi sulla natura multimodale di questo fenomeno, mentre il WP2 si concentra sui correlati comportamentali e neurali del riconoscimento della risata familiare e non familiare.

The aim of the project is to understand the biological scaffolds and universal features of laughter as a multimodal signal shared between human and non-human primates by tracing back its evolutionary pathways. The project is organized into two complementary work packages (WPs) toward which each research unit (UNIPI and UNITO) contributes interactively.

The WP1 explores the form and function of laughter in humans and great apes, focusing on the multimodal nature of this phenomenon, while the WP2 focuses on the behavioral and neural correlates of recognizing familiar and unfamiliar laughter.
